The flashbacks in Arrival are so great, and hit so hard, because those are exactly the little moments that stick out when raising children (at least for me).
My kids waking us up this morning, my daughter is 5, sitting on the bed reading contently, the room filled with golden morning light.
My son is 2, I’m tossing him up in the air in the pool, he’s squealing with excitement.
My daughter is 3, Swimming with her, she asks me to play Little Mermaid with her.
My daughter is 2, I hold her up so we can say goodnight to the sunset.
My son is 3, asking to be carried at the end of a long walk, his fuzzy, heavy little head resting on my shoulder.
My daughter is 5, she writes that her favorite part of her birthday is “plaeing wif my mageik pets”.
My son is one day old, sleeping on my chest, his tiny breath rhythmic and slightly raspy.
My daughter is 5, she’s skipping with excitement as Disneyland opens.
My daughter is a few months old, chortling at funny noises my wife and I make for her.
I could keep going for a long time.
You get the idea.
It’s all a soup in my mind, and it’s all special.

Sometimes the moment is special in recall, it sticks out for unknown reasons.
Other times you have a split second that blasts you with profoundness, and you know you’ll cherish it for the rest of your life.
