Okay, Bucs fans and other interested parties. Let's take a look at Ke'Shawn Vaughn. THREAD:
We are going to start in 18' where Vaughn played his best ball. Shows some nice patience here giving his center time to work to the second level.
Here's another look at it. He knows 6 has the fit so he sets him up inside to allow 78 to get the angle before working back across the block.
Gets overpowered on his pickups sometimes but I like that he stays with it and re-engages here. He's a willing blocker to be certain. I know that doesn't sound like much but not all backs are.
Gets caught flat-footed before he can anchor here and gets blasted. Right place but too slow on his setup.
He's not terribly explosive but he does have some nice burst. Dishes out a bit of smoke as he looks for the sticks. Has plenty of physicality in his game.
Through 4 games, I don't believe I've seen him go down on an arm tackle. He's always behind his pads and has good contact balance. Not the type to get tripped up easily.
Outside gap and zone concepts are his bread 'n' butter. Has a good feel for baiting defenders into lead blockers. He can really get moving once he sticks a foot in the ground.
Another look. Notice how he gets beyond the outside shoulder of his blocker before turning it inside. Leverages the defender out of the play and high steps out of a potential ankle trap for good measure.
No trouble handling a high pass. Immediately gets two hands on the ball when he feels the punch from behind. He struggled with ball security at Illinois (5 fumbles in 2 seasons) before transferring to Vandy. None in 18' and 2 in 19'.
On to Baylor in 18'. Vaughn put on a show here. Solid pass set and rides the defender up the arch. Good punch, inside hand placement, keeps a wide base.
Did I mention Vaughn was a sprinter in high school?
Goodbye.
Another look. The difference between a solid gain and a TD here is the angle 3 takes to the ball. Vaughn presses deep enough to get the safety all the way inside before he bends it back. Feels the ankle trap from the backside again and high steps through it.
I like a back that finishes his runs and Vaughn does it consistently.
I call this burrowing. Again, always behind his pads and consistently keeps a winning pad level.
3 is really having a rough day in rn support. Vaughn hits him with a vicious stiff-arm and, somehow, turns this back in before breaking it. Backs often get to choose between the sideline and contact. Vaughn always chooses contact. I love that.
Anyone know what 8 is flexing on here? Gets ran slap-ass over and gets up strutting. Classic DB move. đŸ€ŁđŸ˜Ź
Y'all want to see a dead body?
Better look. Oof. Gets hit square after too and walks right through it.
On to 19' against LSU. Vaughn was not as good in 19' as he was in 18'. Licht addressed that in his post-pick presser. We should get transcripts soon. However, he showed well in this game despite his line getting whipped pretty badly by the LSU front.
Good contact balance and leg drive. Vaughn avoided/broke 95 tackles in his two seasons at Vandy. Kid runs tough.
One of the rare times you see Vaughn get tripped up but runs through Delpit first then tosses out another stiff-arm and stumbles for 3 more yards before going down. I'll take it.
He gets squared up by Queen but keeps driving his legs and still scores with a bit of help from his line. No dead legs here. He's always churning for more.
The finish was made possible by his pad level when he meets Queen. If he doesn't stand him up this play is over. Low man wins and Vaughn is almost always the low man.
We've seen instances where Vaughn pressed the line to open up his cutback lane but he failed to do that here. He bails too quickly and leaves himself nowhere to go. Not what you want to see on 4th & 1. Thankfully, this doesn't happen often from what I've seen.
Some nice violence here on the punch. Don't just get in their way. Let them know you're here.
Yesterday, the Bucs drafted a tackle that excels in outside zone. Today, they took a back that does as well. I was thrilled BA ditched the concept because they couldn't block it. I have a feeling we may see it again in 2020.
Here, we see the same outside zone but this time he presses it and bends it for a first with the help fo a last-minute lunge. If you tackle Vaughn below the knees he will get the extra yards.
How the hell did he get through there?
Okay, this is great. Starts with the inside pressure as he is supposed to but has the awareness to see the late looper and manages to pick it up. Sadly, his QB shit the bed on it, but it's a fantastic play. Very encouraging.
This is something he will likely be asked to do in Tampa. Late release, settle in the hole, the get upfield for the to convert on 3rd & 10. This is the skill set the Bucs are looking for.
Firm cut inside and solid finish for a couple extra yards. Its the pad level and leg drive at work again.
I mentioned ball security before. He loses it here after the whistle but still does some punishment pushups. It's clear he made a point to improve this aspect of his game and shows accountability here. Coaches love that and so do I.
This easily could've been a tackle for loss. Pad level and leg drive.
The discipline to press the point of attack here again. Contact balance is shown off again too.
Even in the open field he's finishing his runs and getting that extra couple of yards. Ball in the outside hand. Stiff-arm for protection.
You don't normally see Vaughn try to do too much. He rarely goes backward. This was a heat check and an ill-advised one. He is not the type of back that will make something out of this and should be discouraged from trying it.
There is the slightest cut here but it nets him several extra yards. This is where Vaughn shines. Direct, violent runner that wastes no time getting north-south.
Same play. Vaughn has a knack for avoiding direct shots turning them into glancing blows and arm tackles. It reminds me of Kareem Hunt who I LOVED coming out. He's just tough to square up and even tougher to get underneath so he's perpetually falling forward.
Last one of the night. This is Vaughn the runner in a nutshell. Discipline to press it, economic footwork, decisive cuts, solid speed, strong finish.

Overall, I am impressed with Vaughn. He was not on my radar so the pick surprised me. Reach? Maybe, but I feel good about him.
