I just watched Circus of Books and it was... bad. Poorly structured. Was this about the shop? The family? The 80s AIDS crisis? It was all of the above, but disjointed and nothing was really dived deeply into. I will say that I will die for Barry though. He is just sweet & happy.
I always want to see more PoC interviewed for anything re: queerness and our community, but I realize that the tragedies we've faced are often only survived by those with white and cis privilege. The rest of us just don't have the resources. We often don't make it.
I lived in Orlando for 5 years and spent my early 20s exploring the queer world available to me while also being a young, promiscuous homo. I frequented Pulse, Southern Nights, went to P-house like once, and gogo danced for Woodstock (which I think is closed now?)
I remember right after the Pulse tragedy happened (and I texted everyone I knew who performed at and frequented the clubs) the news showed video of a vigil where they had someone reading off the names of those we lost. Mind you, a vast amount of those people were Puerto Rican.
The person who was reading off the names COULD NOT PRONOUNCE LATIN NAMES CORRECTLY. The person who was reading the names of the fallen wasn't even LATINX. Can you imagine my queer Boricua rage hearing names bastardized like that? No one could find a Latinx in Otown to read names?
There's no real point to this thread. I'm just... tired of the forms of queer representation I'm seeing. And I'm a queer who runs a sex shop in West Hollywood, so I just keep thinking how I live the life I'm seeing discussed w/out folks like me being part of the conversation. sad
