The reason we are in this fix isn’t because of “over-dependence on globalization, free trade and global supply chains.” It’s because we failed to prepare, in the face of persistent warnings that a pandemic was inevitable.

We didn’t stockpile masks, testing kits and other materials beforehand. We were slow to respond when the crisis hit, didn’t listen to early warnings, didn’t close the borders in time, didn’t ramp up testing until too late and on and on.

Globalization and free trade didn’t do that to us. We did it to ourselves.
