after studying at the Beijing School of Industrial Fashion Design, she became chief designer at one of Beijing's first independently owned clothing companies in the post-Cultural Revolution era before launching her own label & atelier, Rose Studio.
when she created her couture house, she tailored lavish gowns for Chinese celebrities and private clients, including Song Zuying. The dress she designed for Zuying took two weeks to create, with 200,000 Swarovski crystals hand-sewn into it.
The designer first gained global recognition when Rihanna wore her gown to the 2015 Met Gala. Rihanna came across the piece on the internet while researching a design for the theme, “China: Through the Looking Glass”
the dress took approximately 50,000 hours & over two years to create & complete, weighing about 25kg in the end. Guo was initially worried that Rihanna would not be able to withstand the weight of the dress (she had a 3 person entourage to carry the train).
“Inspired by fairy tales, legends and even military history, every creation tells a story and is a canvas for artistic expression, bringing beauty, romance and the designer’s imagination to life.”
Her first collection, “One Thousand and Two Nights” debuted in China Fashion Week in 2009, 12 years after launching her own company. Her brilliant & magnificent work & attention to detail speaks volumes
Her ss16 collection was her first at Paris FW “Inspired by Spring flowers for femininity and the phoenix for peace and purity, the collection had traditional Chinese influences like gold tassles, intricate threadwork embroidery over silk, bibs and long trains.”
one of my favorite collections of hers, the spring 2017 show was inspired by murals of the St.Gallen Cathedral in Switzerland. Every piece in this collection is phenomenal
guo pei exudes traditional Chinese craftsmanship while simultaneously incorporating contemporary innovation and Western style. Her 2019 collection, titled East Palace is evidence of this.
“The Palace of the East isn’t only a building, but also refers to women, because in Chinese culture you have different sayings about women in palaces.” she highlights that she wants viewers to read the collection through imagination, rather than complete understanding
Guo Pei’s holds exhibitions of her collections globally, & her works have been exhibited at the annual exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, titled "China: Through the Looking Glass" (my life remains unfulfilled until i attend one)
her incredible work has allowed for many achievements in her career, including becoming the second born&raised Asian designer to be invited to become a guest member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture & she was included in World's 100 Most Influential People by Time Mag
why guo pei is superior: her garments simply speak for themselves. the details, the vision, the cultural references, the beauty, everything about her collections are unlike any designer i’ve ever come across. each collection is absolutely breathtaking
the ONLY criticism i have for guo pei is that i would like to see a more diverse cast of models, but everything else about her is beautiful, amazing, exceptional, spectacular, & extraordinary
