Honestly, what disturbs me most about our #TidePodPresident #DisinfectantDonald isn't his lack of understanding of the CONTENT of science. That can be overcome. It's his total & complete ignorance about the PROCESS of science—how science works—that is most distressing. (1/n)
He says things like, "Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning ... it would be interesting to check that. It sounds interesting to me." First of all, what does it mean to "check that"? What would "checking that" look like? (2/n)
Two of the most pervasive myths in science are the "lone genius" & the "accidental discovery." Sure, there are a few stories that may seem fit these scripts, but they distort the reality of science, & more importantly, they overlook the most powerful aspect of science. (3/n)
What makes science a uniquely powerful & effective way of understanding the world is PRECISELY the fact it is intensely collaborative & highly systematic. Results must be independently replicated & scrutinized many times over to enter the domain of what we call "knowledge." (4/n)
