@Stanford trivia: The Stanford Tree is the Stanford Band's mascot and the unofficial mascot of Stanford University. Stanford's team name is "Cardinal", referring to the vivid red color. The tree is the El Palo Alto (Spanish for the tall stick) is a #Sequoia #sempervirens 2/
Two key @Stanford members are linked to the logo. Stanford's team name is Cardinal, referring to the vivid red color. Don Kennedy declared that all Stanford athletic teams would be represented by the color cardinal. More about Don Kennedy & Jasper Ridge 3/ https://jrbp.stanford.edu/news/remembering-don-kennedy
The original @Stanford Tree costume was conceived & constructed by Christine Hutson. When she left she passed the costume and role of the Tree to a conga drum player in the band: now Professor Robert Siegel, a docent at Jasper Ridge seen here wearing the docent class shirt! 4/
Back to the coast redwood! These trees can reach 115 m tall with a trunk diameter of 9 m. The bark can be very thick, up to 30 cm, and quite soft and fibrous, with a bright red-brown color when freshly exposed (hence the name redwood), weathering darker. 5/
The height of #redwoods is closely tied to #fog availability; taller trees become less frequent as fog becomes less frequent. To supplement their water needs, they utilize frequent summer fog events. Fog water is absorbed through leaves, bark, and roots. 6/end
