They say listen to your body and mine was telling me to rewatch @bazluhrmann's Romeo + Juliet for the first time in twenty years and you know what? It stands up, ngl
Regret to inform that Romeo...is a lil bitch
Mercutio wiz robbed
Absolutely everyone in this entire play should have just LISTENED TO BENVOLIO IN THE FIRST PLACE
This really is a narrative for the young. Everyone else is like... rolling their eyes and waiting for the problem plays
See if you kill off all the interesting characters frankly who cares about the romance?
Bet there's some decent Tybalt/Mercutio slash somewhere
Ending always devo tho. He knew a thing or two innit, Shakespeare?
One thing I do really like about this film is the inversion of the gaze - Juliet is (by Hollywood standards) quite plain, and Romeo is the golden boy, and we are invited to gaze longingly at both
And they're both so young and unlined and...innocent? Parallels much late with Call Me By Your Name imo (another film with annoying but compelling protagonists)
ALSO!!! All of the parents in this play fucking suck! You put your kids in this position in the first place! Wankers.
I want to weep for Nurse trying to do the best for her charge. A parable for our times, amirite?!
Paris is an absolute waste of a character. By Othello Billy was like nah, black or white, hero or villain, nobody beige, it doesn't sell playbills
Never trust an apothecary, right girls?
I mean like idk, I wouldn't take poison in order to not be married to [checks notes] Paul Rudd?
It Happened To Me: I fucked off to the desert and my teen queen offed herself
I'm being mean now. I've had too much pinot grigio. Also Leonardo DiCaprio/Romeo has annoyed me for two decades and this isn't helping.
Best line about addiction ever and it was 600 years ago, Shakespeare the GOAT (my poverty but not my will consents, then pay thy poverty)
You know what it's a great ending. Well done everyone.
