So after watching The Pacific it is interesting to me how WWII media can massacre Nazis almost as a comedic punchline, but there is always this level of discomfort when this is depicted for the Japanese (even for me as a viewer). I get why, but it is interesting nonetheless.
Like it’s even interesting how in media “Nazis” is dissociated from “Germans” whereas it was really always just “Japanese” or “Japs” in WWII. I guess also complicated by the fact of the atomic bomb decision AND the fact that the Japanese did equally horrible things as the Nazis.
FURTHER complicated by the fact that Japanese did most of their horrible things to the Chinese, which while orientalism plays into the uncomfortable nature of depicting them as the villains in media, but perhaps orientalism makes it easier for Americans to sorta brush off these
...atrocities. Even though the Japanese government still denies that they existed. Anyways, interesting observations in this thread I will...
