Greek life has a lot of problems. If you’ve never been involved with it you’d probably say “yeah, duh” but they’re not all bad. There are many great causes greek organizations contribute to, genuine friendships built inside them, and connections made BUT
In both participating in it my freshman yr of college & observing it from an outside perspective pretty closely for the rest of my time there, I gotta say this. Y’all need to handle your shit & adjust your priorities.
Most of this is accountability. I know plenty of people friends with accused abusers because they’re either “in their fam” or “they’re a brother”. I cannot stress how fucked up this is. Your fraternal bond should not allow you to ignore sexual assault allegations.
Follow up: if someone is racist, homophobic, transphobic, or any other option YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY CONFRONT THEM AND STOP TOLERATING IT. This is a huge problem in almost all Greek organizations, if you pretend it’s not, you’re enabling it.
Lastly: pretending like you’re friends with everyone you’re in an organization with is not healthy or possible. I have a TON of friends from my old fraternity, but paying fees to a club did not and will never make me consider a couple bigots my friends bc they do too
Y’all can hate on me for this, and I’m sure a lot of people will but you’re lying to yourself if you pretend these aren’t legit concerns. Be good people, transform your organizations from the inside out to reflect the core values they were founded on.
And if you genuinely don’t see any of these in your organization, I am both amazed and very happy to hear that. Keep it up fam
