Tulsi Gabbard, Myths and Reality, a Thread

During the 2020 primary, countless claims were made against Tulsi, with precious little foundation.

This has been bothering me. So I decided to look at the known facts.

Let's begin ...
Myth #1: Tulsi is Anti-Islam

Reality: Tulsi embraces all religions. She values Islam in her statements & honors its religious holidays.

Tulsi to Glenn Greenwald “saying that people who practice the religion of Islam or Muslims pose a threat, that’s not valid and it’s not true.”
Myth #2: Tulsi supports Modi of India with ominous intent.

Reality: like Presidents Trump & Obama, & many other world leaders, Tulsi had friendly meetings with Prime Minister Modi as part of her official duties. She also met with opposition leaders when she visited India.
Myth #3: Tulsi has connections to white supremacists

Reality: Tulsi's Tweet to David Duke:

"U didn't know I'm Polynesian/Cauc? Dad couldn't use "whites only" water fountain. No thanks. Ur white nationalism is pure evil"
Myth #4: Tulsi is an Assad apologist:

Reality: Tulsi backs the International Criminal Court looking into allegations of war crimes against Assad, prosecuting based on any evidence gathered, convicting based on proof, & punishment per precedent. (in this case, likely execution.)
Myth #5: Tulsi is a Republican who goes on Fox

Tulsi goes on any network to reach voters. Holding precise & nuanced views, she is solidly progressive & would be adrift in the GOP, due to her beliefs on the environment, healthcare, DACA, Iran, & her robust Trump censure motion.
Myth #6: Tulsi is a “Russian puppet”

Reality: Tulsi sits in Congress & is a Major in the Army National Guard. Her wish & focus is that the US & Russia do not start a new arms race or nuclear crisis. Saying that she aligns with or takes cues from Russia is absurd & malicious.
Myth #7: Tulsi is Anti-Gay

At 23 she said hurtful things. Serving in Iraq, she saw how LGBTQ soldiers "would give their life for me & I would give my life for them.”

In 2012 she apologized for her earlier words. Now she fully supports the LGBTQ community in word & deed.
Myth #8: Tulsi has suspect religious beliefs:

She says:

“my two sources of inspiration, spiritual comfort, and illumination come from the New Testament, and the Bhagavad Gita (the song of God), the ancient Hindu scripture spoken over 5000 years ago.”
Myth #8 (cont)

And further:

"my "religion" is my loving relationship with God, and the motivation that springs from that relationship to try my best to use my life in the service of humanity and the planet."
Summary: Many myths persist about Tulsi Gabbard. A review of her public statements & record show a woman & a leader who transcends & bursts free from those myths. The day will come when these misguided portrayals have faded away. And our American democracy will be richer for it.
