What Ramdan is and why we fast ✹: a thread for all non-muslims :)
So basically ramadan is one of the months in the Islamic calendar. Its 30 days. For those 30 days we fast begining at sunrise and ending at sun down. During fasting we don’t eat or drink anything. There are a few reasons why we fast.
1. It’s one of the pillars of Islam. To be a Muslim u have to fast ramadan as well as pray, give to charity, do pilgrimage in Mecca, and announce that you only believe there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger.
2. This month was also the month that the Quran was revealed to Muslims through our prophet Muhammad (pbuh). So we fast out of respect. A lot of people make it a goal to read the whole quran or learn multiple pages of it.
3. It’s a way for us to “return” to god. We fast, pray, and remeber god and be grateful for what we have. We remind ourselves that some people live like this daily and aren’t even able to break fast bc they don’t have food (poor people).
A part of fasting is praying so if your not clean to pray (if ur on ur period) then you cannot fast. So girls get a week off ;) But after ramadan we have to make up those days before the next ramadan.
It’s said that if you fast ramadan all of your sins will be washed away for that whole year. A fresh start. Also god locks up all the evil spirits (jinn) so that being holy is easier for us. No distractions basically.
We also have night prayers along with the 5 we do daily but this extra night prayer is special only for Ramadan. Everyone gathers at the mosque and we pray togather. It’s called taraweeh. Only the Sunni sect of muslims do it tho.
After ramdan is eid al fitr (eid of breaking fast) its a celebration for the end of Ramadan where families gather and have a good time. Money is passed out to the children and parties are thrown. Its a very blessed celebration and is one of the 2 holidays that muslims have.
As some of u might alr know we cannot listen to music, cuss, or watch inappropriate things and a lot of you are mindful of that which I and many other Muslims appreciate. So thank you! 💜
If anyone has anything to add plz do. And all of this information is from my interpretation of Islam and how I live. If you do anything different then that’s your interpretation :)
