Three editors @thealligator started #SaveStudentNewsrooms as an advocacy campaign for college journalism in 2018.
In 2020, we’re proud to join other student journalists across the country in sharing how we’ve been working during the coronavirus pandemic.

Our editors have been working from home to keep readers updated on the state of our campus and the people who usually occupy it, and everything can be found on the section of our site dedicated to COVID-19 coverage, created by online manager @Maddie_P48. https://bcheights.com/category/coronavirus/
A timeline was compiled by special projects editor Owen Fahy, assoc. news editor @maddyromance_ , magazine editor Maeve Reilly, editorial assistants Nadine Akkawi and Eric Shea, and copy editors @JKiersznowski and Rachel Phelan. As students reacted to the news that Boston College would be closing residence halls for the rest of the semester, 'Heights' editors interviewed, photographed, and began writing for our last issue of the year. @izzycavazzoni wrote about student reactions. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/13/students-react-class-cancellations/
Campus closing presented immense challenges for some BC students who were unsure of where they would go next, news editor @scottdbaker88 reported. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/20/low-income-students-react-to-bc-closure/
After returning home, assoc. news editor @maddyromance_ reported on the first cases of COVID-19 confirmed among BC students. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/21/individuals-notified-exposure-12-bc-students-covid-19/
Our sports section didn’t stop working, despite college athletics being shut down. Sports editor @_EmmaHealy_ spoke with @BCHockey coach Jerry York about what he and his team had been anticipating for their season, and what comes next. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/22/boston-college-mens-hockey-what-couldve-been/
With BC shut down, local shops and restaurants found themselves struggling without the business students bring in. Assoc. metro editor @GavZhang spoke to the owners about what they need and are hoping for. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/23/businesses-struggle-as-bc-students-leave-campus/
Two BC students who tested positive for COVID-19 shared their experiences with managing editor @abby_hunt_, who wrote about what it’s like to be diagnosed and quarantined, both on and off campus. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/31/bc-students-share-experiences-covid-19/
Special projects editor Owen Fahy and copy editor Haley Hockin investigated the likelihood that BC students could return to campus in the fall. Visual director Meegan Minahan and graphics editor Ally Mozeliak complemented their reporting with graphics. https://bcheights.com/2020/04/09/coronavirus-outlook/
Assoc. news editor @maddyromance_ reported that Federal Work-Study students at BC will not be paid for the rest of the semester if they cannot continue to work, since the University said funds had been "depleted." https://bcheights.com/2020/04/14/bc-says-it-wont-pay-students-unable-to-work/
Some students have found the adjustment to online classes challenging, and they shared this with 'Heights' editors. A1 editor Brooke Kaiserman, magazine editor Maeve Reilly, assoc. mag editor Danny Flynn, and asst. mag editor @annalonnquist reported: https://bcheights.com/magazine/index.php/2020/hiatus-from-the-heights/
When editors were scrambling to put together the last issue of the academic year, editor-in-chief @cmmartin113 wrote that 'The Heights' will continue reporting from home. Over a month has passed since we left campus, but 'Heights' coverage won’t slow down. https://bcheights.com/2020/03/15/letter-from-the-editor-bc-closes-heights-reporting-continues/
Editors at 'The Heights' aren’t paid, and they’ve worked to adjust to classes at home while continuing to report on BC and its surrounding community. Additionally, countless people who haven’t been listed here have worked on 'Heights' coverage during this time.
'The Heights' is editorially and financially independent from Boston College, meaning we don’t get any sort of support from the University. Our business team, headed by GM Sophie Lu, is continuing to work to make sure 'The Heights' can operate, even now.
If you want to support independent student journalism, please donate at http://support.bcheights.com . We’re proud of the work we’ve done and will continue to deliver the quality of reporting our readers need.
And a shout out to our social media director, Gretchen Haga, for always working to get our stories out to a larger audience.
