I have this weird relationship with JoJo Part 4 because I really, really love it but there are a few aspects that bother me enough to bring it down from a 10/10, all time favorite to like an 8/10, really great, but not quite perfect series. (Thread will have PART 4 SPOILERS)
Starting with what I love - I absolutely adore the setting, premise, and small town 90s aesthetic. How do you follow up a worldwide road trip to stop the most powerful creature on the planet? Scale it WAY the fuck down and focus on the mundane bizarreness of everyday life.
I'm also a HUGE fan of the different character dynamics of the cast. It's refreshing to see the defeated antagonists be reincorporated into the cast as friends and acquaintances. Some don't even like the main characters but they coexist and come together as a community perfectly.
Then as the perfect antagonist for the residents of this "normal" town you have Yoshikage Kira - a ridiculous, yet grounded serial killer who wants to enjoy his quiet life without fights or competition while also getting away with killing young women and waifuing their hands.
While he doesn't have complicated motives, the overall presentation of Kira is perfect. He's one of the most passive antagonists ever who chooses to play defense over offensive in order to protect his normal life, which is an understandable motive, minus the killing/ hand fetish.
Now for the the aspects I don't love about the series. Starting off with the least important - I really wish they did more with Josuke's backstory. Did it HAVE to involve time travel? No, but you can't blame people for being disappointed when it felt like a forgotten development.
Another development that would've taken my enjoyment for the series to the next level would've been Kira actually growing attached to his new family and fighting to protect them and his new normal life, which was a development I felt was hinted at when he fought Stray Cat.
I don't hold these two things against the series but I'm disappointed they didn't pan out, not only because I find them interesting but because I feel like they were intentional plot points that never came to fruition which will always feel more hollow than plans not going my way
The biggest issue I have unfortunately occurs during one of the best arcs. First off, I absolutely love the parameters of the last arc and I love BITES ZA DUSTO as a final power up. Hayate figuring out how to get around it after inadvertently killing the crew is really compelling
What is NOT compelling is having the entire crew literally around the corner while Josuke and Hayato 2v1s Kira in the epic final boss fight we built up to for 30+ episodes. Especially when they know Josuke should be meeting them, actually hear Josuke scream, and shrug it off.
I don't mind the ridiculousness of JoJo, but I can't hang when the writing violates the previously established in-universe common sense. It's also not satisfying to see most of the cast be irrelevant in the final boss fight after growing attached to them throughout the series.
Do these issues really bring down the part that much? Not really. It's still a fantastic piece of media that means a lot to me, but it's beyond frustrating to experience something that just falls short of perfection.
IN CONCLUSION: Part 4 is not perfect but I still love it.
