a deeper look into eunseoki by 3racha and why is one of their saddest and most underrated songs ; a thread
tw// suicide, smoking, bullying, self harm, violence
as a 3racha enthusiast for a good two years, it& #39;s still hard to understand all of their song since they have a big discography and a lot of deleted tracks. i must admit that 은석이 was a song that didn& #39;t caught much of my attention, but after giving it the proper+
time to read the lyrics, it really is a deep and dark song, and incredibly0 underappreciated. in one of 3racha& #39;s live (Channie& #39;s Room ep. 4) they listened to the song and said some important things abt it, likewise where they got their inspiration from and the overall vibes.
the "our twisted hero" they talk abt is a 1987 book that also had a movie adaptation in 1992. Eom Seok is one of the main characters, a bully who holds everything in his grade, more than his own teacher and uses threats and violence to dominate the other students.
if you read the book& #39;s plot, its easier to think the story talks about one of Eun Seok& #39;s targets (the protagonist), but i think 3racha wanted to express the other side of the story. eun seok& #39;s side, and how he became a bully and built that hierarchy.
just from that small depth, this song already slaps in content. now we start with the actual song and lyrics.
"The school looks lively but it& #39;s different on the inside, there& #39;s many demons who bother that kid / So on March 2nd, he begins living depressed at his aunt& #39;s house"
these verses go back to before the book& #39;s scenario, where eunseok is not a bully, but the bullied boy.
these verses go back to before the book& #39;s scenario, where eunseok is not a bully, but the bullied boy.
his school seems okay to their parents and teachers, but it hides deep inside the mean kids and their atrocities to others. eunseok moves to his aunt at the beggining of a new school year, at a new school. he& #39;s afraid, and melancholic.
"He starts high school again and thinks the past will repeat itself if he looks weak/ So he begs his mom for trendy and expensive clothes/ He forces himself to bite a cigarette in his mouth and follow their maze-like path"
in various parts of the song, you can actually hear noises at the background, as if you& #39;re watching the movie and following the characters action. at this moment, eunseok chokes on the cigarette smoke, showing his forced attempt to not be bullied this time and look "cool".
"He walks the path to school with light footsteps/ I only have to carry my own bag, something basic like my own possessions/ Become that kid& #39;s happiness, he learns that break times are actually for breaks"
eunseok is still not "corrupted", and becomes confident of his new style and personality at school. the bag he carries is a metaphor to his life at that place and his behavior, telling him to not care abt what others think and to be more chill and "take breaks at break times".
the bell rings. a new act starts.
"Now he gets acknowledged instead of ignored, & #39;Hey, do you have a cigarette? Give me a light& #39;/ Now he& #39;s hanging out with the same punks he used to hate and it feels strange/ But he still feels happy to have those friendships"
the cigarette smoke is now natural for eunseok, he& #39;s gotten used to it now that he hangs out with the bullies. he doesn& #39;t feel confortable at first, but, hey, better than being beat up by them. this is the part where the song& #39;s protagonist starts to change drastically.
"On Friday, he doesn& #39;t have clothes for gym class so he hit the back of a wimpy kid& #39;s head/ Everyone& #39;s gaze moved to him and darkness fell over the kid& #39;s face/ The kid trembles on the ground as he gets beat up"
eunseok& #39;s mind just changed to the one of a bully. and from the way it& #39;s depicted, it& #39;s not his first victim. the scene is really violent and bloody and it shows that the kid is not afraid to harm anyone to get what he wants. on the background, moans of pain from his victim.
"After his punches stop, he spits on the idiot kid& #39;s bloody face/ The kid gets off the ground and asks him what the hell he& #39;s doing/ Seeing the kid talk back makes him pissed off, he thinks back to his old self and swallows his spit"
at this point, when the boy is able to talk back to his bully, eunseok turns back to his past and is unable to not compare himself to the kid. he feels weak, since he couldn& #39;t stand up for himself previously. he momentaneously starts to doubt his actions. the bell rings again.
"He used to feel sorry when people bumped his shoulder/Guess it feels good to intentionally bump other people& #39;s shoulders now/He lets off steam through violence, hitting kids that are begging on their knees"
"As if he& #39;s thinking back to his past, he re-enacts his assaults on others"
eunseok is now filled with rage, and is more violent than ever. he& #39;s trying to forget his past by beating up the weaks, trying to canalize his anger of the days he used to be the one bullied. but then...
eunseok is now filled with rage, and is more violent than ever. he& #39;s trying to forget his past by beating up the weaks, trying to canalize his anger of the days he used to be the one bullied. but then...
"The mistake he& #39;s held in his hands, mark an irreversible red sign/ A crimson line is drawn on his & #39;friend& #39;s& #39; neck, the devil& #39;s hand that you tried to shake off was actually you/Scared at the sight you& #39;re seeing, your shaking legs hit the floor as you let out a shout"
eunseok& #39;s violent behaviour came to its peak. he kills one of his friends by c.hoking him to death. now the point of view changes, and we can hear shouts and sobs. now he realized what he became and what his action lead him to do. there& #39;s no going back now. a deep breath.
"At the ospital, the kid& #39;s mother is shouting his name in tears/ On his wrists, turmoil heavier than the backpacks he used to carry"
now we have the final act. eunseok can& #39;t take the guilt and regret anymore. his mother scream and sobs at the distance. it& #39;s not clear if he actually managed to k.ill himself or if it was just an attempt, but based on the book and film, he survived
now, remember the bag mataphor? at first, the bag was light, filled only with eunseok& #39;s pure intentions of living a peaceful life. now, it was heavy, filled with anguish, guilt and lost hopes. the bell rings again. class is over.
