Ok, happy thread: what's your favorite Solar System object and why?
I'll start. My favorite is an object that now only exists in many pieces. Sometime in the first millennium AD, a large comet flew too close to the Sun and disintegrated. Its fragments still occasionally grace our skies
I like it because each piece is part of a detective story. Every time a big fragment comes around the Sun, it breaks into smaller pieces. Astronomers have spent decades figuring out when each pieces separated, building up the evolutionary history of the disintegration.
