The Hippocratic oath. Most know simply as "do no harm."

But it's much, much more.

"I will use treatment to help the sick...but never with a view to injury or wrong-doing. Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor suggest such a course...." 1/
"...I will keep pure and holy both my life and my art....
into whatsoever house I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from abusing the bodies of man or woman, bond or free."2/
And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession...I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.
If I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain reputation among all men for my life and for my art." 3/
I teach physicians leadership. We talk about oaths and values and character of healthcare providers. While soldiers who enter the military know the possibility they may be asked to fight and die in defending our nation, most physicians do not think about that possibility 4/
But these unique circumstances - treating those during a deadly pandemic while putting their own lives on the line - certainly expands the requirement of professional action by our healthcare providers.

We need to thank them, more and more. 5/5
