To those getting genetic counseling grad school acceptances on #GCMatch2020, CONGRATS! 🎉 *Especially* to those wondering if you’ll “fit in” w/ your program or if you belong in the field: WELCOME. YOU BELONG. #GCchat
I don’t know if anyone needs to hear this, but if you’re feeling both excited to join the field & worried about fitting in or hesitant about the prog you matched at, that’s OK. I personally had a generally positive grad school experience, but I know some GCs who felt less welcome
Our field’s AWESOME, but it has stereotypes & lacks diversity. If you’re new here & worried you don’t fit a classic picture of a GC: don’t be. We need more perspectives & a greater variety of folks in the field. I’m thrilled to welcome you to genetic counseling - whoever you are.
“Fit” is talked about lots in grad interviews... But GCs find community in SO many places: grad progs yes, but also NSGC SIGs, Twitter, research groups, former mentors, friends in other progs. I hope all GCs help new students (& new grads) find their community and feel welcome.
& if you didn’t get in to a GC program this round, I’m sorry - that sucks. You still belong and are welcome in the genetics community. Many folks in the field applied multiple years. Wishing you the best of luck for next time & reach out to #GCchat with questions or for support.
