As transportation nerds, we love that Durham is walking and biking to get exercise, fresh air, and pick up food or essentials. During this uncertain situation we are certainly rethinking how we can travel around the city. #movehealthydurham. 🚶🚴🛴(1/)
We’ve heard from many of you asking about street closures, sharing information about these programs in other cities. Unfortunately, while this has not been ruled out for Durham, there are no immediate plans to do this. Read this thread to understand why. ⬇️ (2/)
With limited staff and resources at this time, we ask for patience and understanding as the department focuses on supporting transportation needs like @GoDurhamTransit public transit (3/)
for essential workers and community members who count on those services, and ensuring safety of passengers and staff 🙏 (4/)
We know that being outside provides an important mental and physical outlet for many of us, and remind everyone to travel safely and adhere to the Durham Stay-at-Home Order: https://durhamnc.gov/4013/City-of-Durham-COVID-19-Coronavirus-Upda (5/)
Durham has several miles of biking and hiking trails – if the trails are getting crowded, check out our Bike & Hike Map and consider trying a new route: https://durhamnc.gov/1031/Durham-Bike-Hike-Map (6/)
The Bike and Hike Map also shows some low-volume streets in parts of the City further from downtown, that could be suitable for biking. These are shown in green on the map, labeled "Shared Roadway". (7/)
@dprplaymore also has a recent blog post about suggestions for good etiquette for trails during this time of COVID-19: http://dprplaymore.blogspot.com/2020/04/trail-etiquette-in-time-of-covid.html?m=1 (8/)
There's even this cool one minute video about how to share trails with others (9/)
For other routes to also explore, consider our future Neighborhood Bike Routes (seen in purple in the map below) for low-volume streets to ride on. These include streets like Watts, Glendale, Gray, Juniper, Spruce, Taylor, Otis, and Arnette: https://durhamnc.gov/3763/Neighborhood-Bike-Routes (10/)
If you’re driving out there, keep in mind everybody out on our city streets. Please obey speed limits and share the road. Make eye contact with people walking and biking as they approach to make sure you see them, stay alert, and watch out for each other to avoid crashes. (11/)
Our Transportation Department leadership continues to follow guidance from health officials as the COVID-19 situation evolves, and we're watching what other cities are doing to provide safe travel options. Thanks for your patience and understanding during these times. (/12)
