The most annoying thing happened at work today. In the middle of reviews a new patient is admitted to the ward. I glanced at his folder quickly to see what we were managing him for. Spoke to the mother and asked a few questions and told her we would be with her soon.
Now there are a quite a number of ill patients needing attention so the reviews took longer than usual. On my ward now all the doctors on our team, from senior resident to house officer are all females.
After an hour the mother calls out to me. At this time there are three doctors sitting around a table discussing a patient who has rather started spiking after two weeks of IV antibiotics. He also has a complex congenital heart disease so we’re not taking chances at all.
The mother looks at me, wearing a white coat with my stethoscope hanging around my neck, looks at the two other doctors who are sitting around the table making decisions. Who by the way, in the last hour have been walking around interacting with patients and says :
‘ Sister, me pa ky3w, doctor biaa nni around ?’ This thing happens all the time. A large majority of the people we see, see a woman in a hospital setting and automatically assume that you’re not the doctor.
I wrote a prescription once and handed it to a father, who promptly took it, turned to a male nurse and asked him, ‘Doc what should I do with this?’ 🤯
We are tired.

Management.
