PLAYER DEVELOPMENT - a thread & real life example from the professional game.

Techniques here can 100% be used at professional, youth & amateur level.

RT's appreciated.
Many coaches believe 'analysis' to be drawing circles and lines around players and breaking down individual moments. Often showing a dutch wonderkid breaking lines with passes.

Cool! How this is used to change YOUR own player behaviour in the real world?
What targets have you set them to measure success and improvements? How do they KNOW what's expected of them? What are you actually analyzing game-to-game? Are you just giving your opinion on whether they are improving?
An example used in a webinar @g4gey has delivered a few times.

Alberth Elis - Houston Dynamo
In 2017 Alberth scored 4 and assisted 4 from open-play.

In 2018 Alberth scored 7 assisted 8

+3G & 4A

How did he improve?
Here are Alberth's shots from open play in 2017. Green dots are goals. Notice the cluster just inside the box on the right?
Here's that goal vs Orlando in May. Early in the season. The goalkeeper 100% should have saved this.
What does this do for Alberth? It wrongly reinforces the belief he should shoot from here often. Hence the cluster of unsuccessful attempts at goal for the rest of the season.
Here are a few of those shots.
What can we do to change player behaviour? Alberth has so much potential, and is a major threat in MLS.

How can we make him even better?
What are his strengths?

Taking players on, transition (don't slow it down too much), exploit space behind defenders.
How do we help him?

Show him evidence. Show him where goals come from (not the edge of the box too often!). Show him examples of other great players NOT shooting from there, show him how good he COULD be.

Give him other options to think about.
What did Alberth do? He wanted more. He's a winner. He wanted to work on this. He wanted updates throughout the season.

We set him targets and regularly reviewed the film.

Was he perfect... no. Was he trying to change his behaviour? Yes.

Alberth is a brilliant pro. Driven.
Here are some examples of Alberth in 2018, after we have reviewed this and set him some goals.
What did the whole year look like?
Shots from this area are massively reduced. Here's 2017 vs 2018.

Shots from inside the box at 81% vs 75% previously.

Average shot distance 13.4 meters vs 15.7 meters.

Over 2 meters closer to goal per shot.
Here's some examples of his change in behaviour in 2017 vs 2018. Alberth now taking better, more dangerous shots AND choosing to dribble and pass. More assists too.
In 2018 Alberth was named to MLS all-star team and unsurprisingly there was interest in him from other clubs. Nice profit for the club if they wanted to sell.

Why is this important?
Recording shots on players can be done at youth level and often already is. Do you have video of each game? If so, this is a simple exercise. Do you have a parent who can mark an x on a sheet of paper for each shot? Do you have an injured player?
Knowing what you are looking for beforehand means that really effective and powerful analysis can be done by almost any team. We have consultancy clients who do this now and have a significant improvement in attacking players. College teams do this with us.
We're working on these concepts with a national team forward in Europe. The only difference is we don't need to record the shots by hand. 15-20 shots per game = 15 mins of work.

What you can get from this is HUGE.

Set targets, review, reinforce.
We have some players making their own shot maps and pinning them in lockers. They set targets for % of shots from good/bad locations and they are getting better because of it.
Soon we will be bringing this to life with a series of courses aimed at players.

For now we have a series of courses which address these sorts of things. Analysis can be completed by anybody. Anybody.
Here's a link to our courses and website - https://www.coachtechsoccer.com/soccer-coaching-courses/

If you think your players will want this, then please subscribe. We will let you know when they are released.
If you think this is for you as a coach, the courses are on-demand and self-paced. Feedback is 99% glowing and positive.
