I’ve had twitter since September 2019. Six months later, most of the students who dm me are minoritized. They tend to either ask for advice, invite me to join organizations or initatives, ask to meet, or tell me how happy they are to see me as a scientist. 1/
Do you get those messages too? 2/
If no, do you know why? 3/
One interpretation is that some minoritized students are relatively more reluctant to approach or ask for your help, despite your efforts to be welcoming 4/
There could be many reasons why I am primarily approached by minoritized students and colleagues. Let’s be honest though, it’s likely because I am black; sometimes I say funny or thoughtful things, or dance https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😀" title="Grinning face" aria-label="Emoji: Grinning face"> 5/
Does your department have black faculty? 6/
Does your department any minoritized faculty? What happens if you remove asian or asian American faculty? 7/
Does this affect the quality of education provided to your minoritized students? Or students in general? 8/
I bet it does. So, what are you doing to do about it? 9/
Please, please, don’t hire us because we are black. Hire us because we are a badass scientists, who ‘fits’ what your department is looking for 10/
When you see us in your applicant pool, don’t ignore the fact that we worked, sometimes, twice as hard to get into the pool.

Don’t ignore that by being black, we serve a section of your student population that you may have left underserved for years. 11/
We are about to enter the faculty, proposal, & grad application hunger games, perhaps over the next few(?) years. There are a few things to remember. 12/
Remember that our families and black friends suffered more during COVID-19, which affects the paper writing surge going on right now.

Everyone suffered; women’s productivity suffered more than men. But, we are talking about black people right now. 13/
Remember that we often choose projects to improve our communities. Don’t dismiss them as simply local projects, read the papers and discern the quality of the scholarship! 14/
Remember we perform relatively more DEI work because we could not possibly survive in this system without giving back or trying to improve it. Remember DEI work takes time and energy. 15/
Remember we need more role models than the awesome guy who stood on the edge of the volcano https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🌋" title="Volcano" aria-label="Emoji: Volcano">. 16/
Remember that by being holistic in your considerations, you’ll be able to more accurately compare us to others 17/
