I’ve been really struggling today with what Liz Truss, the government’s new Women’s & Equalities Minister, has said. To use transphobic dog whistles such as ‘protecting single-sex spaces’ when talking about Gender Recognition Act reform deeply frightens me...
- it seems that we might not only make no progress at all (the progress merely being about making it easier for one to change one’s legal gender - nothing to do with access to single-sex spaces) but that we might actually regress...
and that it might become even harder for trans people to access services or enter gendered spaces...
I also don’t think the parallels with section 28 are unfounded. To say that under 18s should be protected from decisions that they could make that are irreversible in the future has undoubtable echoes of the homophobia faced by gay & bi young people in the 1980s...
Under 18s in this country can only access counselling and puberty blockers (the effects of which are reversible) anyway - so why would the Minister feel the need to include this? ...
