Time for #Roc to face the fact things will never change unless the structures and systems change around schools. It is too bad @TDade is leaving but we will never #changethenarrative until we #changethesystem. #rcsdonefamily won't matter until we are #monroecountyonefamily
The school system in #Roc isn't broken. It is working exactly as it was designed to. It is however immoral. We can not blame the school board without blaming structural racism and systemic inequities.
We must acknowledge a past where a system that intentionally advantaged white people was built, own a present where people very happily still benefit from that system, and build a future where all children get the education they need and deserve.
All institutions in #Roc need to step up and name racism and structural inequities that oppress our community members and actively work to dismantle a culture of white supremacy. Anything less is an endorsement of a belief system that white ppl deserve more than everyone else.
We can do better but we must face the truth that Rochester is one of the racist communities in the country. It is not shameful for white people to acknowledge racist systems, it is shameful to keep on like they don't exist.
Our schools are a powerful structure for reinforcing a twisted, wicked idea. We can fix them. The problem is our ignorance and acceptance. The solution begins with a process of truth and reconciliation.
