Welcome to the first #DecolonizeDNA Day Twitter Conference! Some basic info:

#DNADay recognizes the publication of #DNA & completion of the Human Genome Project. Please be respectful. Anyone engaging in harassing language will be blocked. Schedule: https://decolonize-dna.org/schedule/
What exactly is a "Twitter Conference"?

A Presenter presents their/his/her topic in a thread of tweets using text, images, slides, links, etc (a 'tweet-talk', if you will) from their own handles in the first 30 mins of an assigned hour. Schedule: https://decolonize-dna.org/schedule/  1/10
What are other roles in a "Twitter Conference"?

At ~30 mins into the hour, invited co-Panelists will engage the Presenter with Qs based on their own academic expertise. But anyone can ask questions! Just reply on the thread, be sure to tag the person & use #DecolonizeDNA 2/10

We also have two moderators: @kstsosie and @LMGLandry. They will be guiding the conversation throughout the day from the @DecolonizeDNA handle and their own. Not only will they keep time, but they will also guide the tone. 3/10
Respectful Conduct:

All Presenters and Panelists are academic professionals who are graciously providing their time and expertise. We also want to highlight voices that come from underrepresented communities and provide a welcome space that is free of hate & discrimination. 4/10
Respectful Conduct:

We will adhere to @Twitter's Rules to promote a safe social media environment. Violators of Twitter's Hateful Conduct Policy will be reported ( https://help.twitter.com/forms/abusiveuser) and blocked from the event account. 5/10
Respectful Conduct:

We realize that merely blocking someone is a limited act, especially since this is an open platform. We encourage others to not engage or provoke hecklers for their own safety.

Views of the Presenters & Panelists belong to them exclusively. 6/10
Why Twitter?

#Science really thrives on open discourse to share ideas, experimental results, methods, which is probably why so many academics use Twitter. But this form of #scicomm is key so that we can also extend those conversations to the public. https://www.labsexplorer.com/c/twitter-and-scientists-a-love-story_185

Why Twitter?

Well before the #COVID19 pandemic mobilized #Academia to use social media in new ways, the #DecolonizeDNA Day Twitter event was planned to bring together scientists globally (albeit on EDT time) w/o travel & w/o conference budget. 8/10 https://decolonize-dna.org/faqs/

Why Twitter?

Events due to #COVID19 have had huge impacts worldwide, showing the importance of bridging #science & #health awareness to world leaders, funding agencies & global citizens. 🌎🌍🌏

We hope that open #scicomm can promote transparency, trust & highlight issues 9/10
