There seems to be a recent push for journalists and television stations to report "more positive stories." While it is wonderful when we can report an uplifting story (and we DO take the opportunity to do so), our job is to tell people what's happening.
Sometimes that means reporting information that's unpleasant or unfortunate. It's not fun to report on, but it is necessary. We can't control whether someone perceives a story as "positive" or "negative," but we CAN tell you what's going on in context.
And when we do get the opportunity to show someone doing good or something uplifting, we CAN take the opportunity to highlight their work.
