『D A Y 5』

Today's topic will be about how to improve your photography!! Not a lot of photos in this one, tho I have some important stuff to share!!
First up, personal experiences!! I learned a lot from Thor, Vinz, and Michos primarily. Vinz for the general stuff, Michos for handling the camera and criticizing my photos, and Thor for using Lightroom (My workflow and editing is a very modified Thor's).
Don't be afraid to ask other photographers for tips and CCs on your photos!! They see things differently and they might spot something that you won't. Until now I still ask Michos on how I can improve my photos HAHA labyu michos come back soon pls
Working in a group (Exposure 21 best group 😍😍😍) also teaches you a lot about how other photographers work, and also how you should work in a team!! And when photographing the same subject, you gotta adjust and learn how to set your photos apart from the rest.
Next is a surprise!! Stop taking photos when you feel like you're not learning anything new anymore. I stopped documenting events for Pisay( YMSAT, Foundation Week, etc.) coz I just get tired and there's nothing new about it.
Instead, what you can do is observe and think about new things you can do instead of the same old same old.
Learn to maximize your gear!! Even if you're using a point and shoot or an APS-C crop sensor with kit lens, don't let it limit what you can do. Skill >>> gear most of the time. A skilled photographer can do more with a phone camera than a newbie with the latest full frame DSLR.
So what if it’s grainy? Bump up that ISO to get that photo properly exposed. ISO 6400 is perfectly acceptable in some situations (definitely not for magazines and billboards tho). Only pixel peepers will get mad at that.
Jamie Windsor, my favorite youtube photographer, said that “Technical know-how is NOT artistic know-how” and
“It’s not about how a photo looks, it’s about how a photo feels”. Even bad photos can, arguably FEEL better.
Remember, your strive for perfection isn’t the end, it’s only the means to further yourself even more by having something as undefined as “perfect” to compare your current self to.
For portraits, don't forget that they don’t tell the whole story. It can only capture the present state, the rest is left up to the interpretation of the viewer.
It’s a marriage between art, technicalities, and the message you wanna portray.
Don't get caught in the misconception that portraits tell everything you need to know about a person/people!! Even they are subject to bias when being viewed.
My pet peeve in photography is when someone says that there are definitive settings and that there are rules you should follow ALL THE TIME. No, you don't always have to use rule of thirds and use f1.8 for all low light shots, coz there are different ways to conceive a shot.
Challenge what you know. Some shots just... don't follow any rules. The "rules" aren't set, they're just suggestions. Throw away that dynamic range. Underexpose. Experiment.
Move out of your comfort zone. Shoot in harsh sunlight. the more you learn about the things they tell you not to do, the more you can actually do them properly and use them to your advantage instead.
Do things that break your workflow. Instead of aiming for warm colors, do cold ones instead. Doing the same workflow for ages will limit your peripheral vision on your own skill. If you think you're good enough, you're probably not.
MOVE OUT OF TRENDS. If everyone does the same thing over and over again, then it's no longer unique (looking at you, orange and teal 😠😠😠) and it loses its value.
Lastly, have the mindset that the peak you're trying to climb as a photographer is different than others. Everyone has their own preferences and style and only you can be you. It's only a matter of when and how you can fully develop your skills.
To finish this thread of my insecurities, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend watching Jamie Windsor on YouTube. His content focuses on challenging preconceived notions about photography, and his videos are very educational. I beg u to watch pls https://www.youtube.com/user/jamiewindsor
For my last day of feature week, I'll just be discussing my own journey in photography and, what photography is to me. Expect dramatic shiz HAHA cya
