why call me by your name is NOT predatory: a thread
1) elio 17, oliver 24, age of consent in italy is 14. so lets throw the "hes not legal" arguement out.
2) its not a predatory story. if you havent read the book or seen the movie, it might look sketch and weird. ITS NOT. (1/8)
the story is about teenage love and lust, and is primarily (and fully in the book) from the perspective of elio. hes 17 years old and from the beginning chapters hes OBSESSED w oliver basically LUSTING over him the entire time. its NOT a story of old man uses young gay yass (2/8)
3) the attraction happens to be two-sided and they both do like each other. however, theres ups and downs and hesitations from oliver, PROBABLY because of the whole age gap situation. not ONCE in the story oliver is being predatory or in any sense forcing elio to be w him (3/8)
4) heres why the movie looks weirder than the show: a) the age gap between the actors. armie hammer (30 at the time?) looks WAY older than 24 and timothee chalamet (20?) barely looks 17. b) the ending chapter is not in the movie. they show elio being sad and depressed. (4/8)
and i agree, that just screams "old man used little boy and now hes sad cuz he was manipulated by him" WHICH IS NOT THE CASE! the final chapter shows elios views on the relationship, years later, and trust me, hes way more than "just sad". (5/8)
5) "consent" is written over the ENTIRE relationship. from elio, and even from his parents. oliver's. behaviour. is. not. predatory. whatsoever. (6/8)
6) art can be disturbing. im not trying to say anyone who finds the movie weird is stupid or wrong, cuz i get where they're coming from. but if u wanna filter art that hard, there will literally be nothing left. (7/8)
anyways, the whole purpose of the thread was to show that cmbyn is NOT a story of manipulation WHATSOEVER, but a story of lust, love and complicated relationships. end of thread. periodt. (8/8)
