Dear Twitterverse,

I know we are all overwhelmed, so I apologize for burdening you. I humbly reach out to you for your help, on behalf of my sweet 7th grade student, Elizabeth. Elizabeth lost her grandfather earlier this week to #COVID19. He happened to die on her birthday. 1/
Her teachers came together to get the family essential items, groceries, meals, and a birthday cake (to lift her spirits). Elizabeth's family members are also devastatingly out of work. We're at the point of needing additional support. 2/
We could not find any reliable funding sources. @nychra is offering $900 in assistance for burials that do not exceed $1700- the family has already applied. But even if this comes through, the family is still far from having the means to properly put to rest Grandpa Gavino. 4/
It's hard to send an ask like this knowing the financial distress the world is facing. If you cannot contribute, please consider sharing this GoFundMe page, or re-tweeting this thread. That would mean a lot. Elizabeth's mother gave me permission to share it widely. 6/
Also, thank you all for supporting me. On year 10 as a teacher, I'm still learning what it means to be a public school teacher, and public servant.

Fight hard to see that light at the end of the tunnel.

Love,
Ms. Shon
