When you have a fire in a small town:
Most of the people you see in turnout gear are people you know- a neighbor, the lady who works in the supermarket, your son-in-law,your grown kids’ classmates from high school. You’ve seen them a thousand times but today they look different. https://twitter.com/englishelective/status/1253640900057628672
The supermarket lady sternly directs traffic. The “kids” help each other with their respirators. Your neighbor climbs a ladder & enters a smoke-filled apartment to rescue residents. They all have a job to do & they do it. They don’t look like the people you know. They’re at work.
And they work to save a part of the Village that’s going up in flames. A place where immigrants have created a thriving business, where we have watched their children born& grown up. They’re a part of our Village. And politics plays no part in trying to save that business.
It’s when we see the best of us, as a community, come together. “Save” is the goal, not hate or derision. Politics doesn’t matter here; saving homes & lives & businesses does.
Last night, the business owners scraped through the mess & rubble. Last night, we talked to a tenant who’s lost his home & belongings. Last night, nearby business owners thanked their stars for firemen. Last night, exhausted firefighters went home to a hot shower & a cold beer.
