anyone who’s not a lesbian is capable of being lesbophobic.
yes it’s less common in sapphic spaces, that doesn’t mean non-lesbian wlw can’t be lesbophobic sometimes.
examples of lesbophobia I’ve seen from other wlw:

“calling yourself a lesbian is so outdated, [insert label here] is more progressive”

“you don’t like men? how can you be so narrow-minded?”

“wait, you think [x man] is attractive? there’s no way you’re a lesbian!”
obviously some lesbians have a complicated relationship with men as a whole, and a handful may even be questioning privately, so these comments are especially gross and presumptive
when a lesbian is lesbophobic towards themselves or another lesbian, it’s usually a product of internalized lesbophobia.

however, in the case of TERFs and other exclusionists, they’re perpetuating actively malicious bigotry they probably don’t also face.
also, lesbophobia is more than just “a subset of homophobia.”

we need to stop calling things “subsets of homophobia” because lesbian oppression is about more than just suffering because our proximity to gay men makes our oppressors associate us with them.
contrary to popular belief, some lesbophobia (usually men) affects non-lesbian wlw.

ex:

“you kiss girls? that’s hot 😍

“ew, I can’t change in the same room as you!”

“you have it so much better than the rest of us, at least straight men jerk off to porn of you.”
these examples of lesbophobia aren’t misdirected whatsoever. bi, pan, ply, omni, and all other m-spec wlw experience their full effects.

I think sometimes the lesbian community forgets this in our quest to carve out a space for ourselves to exist in peace.
they call us dykes because we love women, and that threatens our perceived availability to men.

they don’t give a shit about which wlw are attracted to men and which of us aren’t, as long as we love women, we’re all a bunch of ugly, hairy, man-hating dykes to them.
trans lesbians, nonbinary lesbians, disabled lesbians, neurodivergent lesbians, lesbians of color, muslim lesbians, jewish lesbians, all lesbians who are intersectionality marginalized experience ten times the discrimination of white cis abled lesbians. always have, always will.
this #LesbianVisibilityWeek, try to learn about lesbian history.

just learning one fact about us and our predecessors you didn’t know before will make you less likely to unwittingly perpetuate lesbophobia. you might even be able to educate some ignorant people going forward. 🏳️‍🌈
