Alex Telles is a left-footed left-back playing for Porto.
Here is his 2019/2020 season’s heat map.
Before starting to analyze his qualities and improvements points, here is below a little reminder of his statistics so far this season ⬇️
Alex Telles stats in Primeira Liga this season:
-8 goals (6th of the league, first defender of the ranking), scored 5 from penalties
-5 assists (5th assist provider of the league)
-13 G + A (4th most decisive player, 1st defender)
-78,43% dribbling success (1st of the league)
Although he sometimes attempts complex passes (73,3% forward pass accuracy), he is a useful teammate when it comes to find attacking players in behind. His vision and ability to manipulate spaces from his own half is a precious asset, especially in fast attack situations.
Getting involved high in offensive phases is part of Telles’ play and his ability to combine in small areas with his teammates is an asset for the team.
Besides, he is capable of finding teammates through aerial passing deep on his side thanks to his above-average technique.
Telles has the highest successful dribbling rate in the Portuguese Liga (78,43%) as he uses dribbling wittingly mainly for two situations:
-Getting out of pressure by dribbling his opponent.
-Creating crossing situations by dribbling his opponents on the left wing.
Concerning his short/medium pass, he’s got a sh/m pass accuracy of 88,17% which is quite standard for a wing-back.
Though, he is very good at getting the ball out of dangerous areas by passing forward, mostly in his own half.
As you have understood, Telles is a very modern lateral.
Technically gifted: dribbling, key passing and combining with teammates are part of his play.
Moreover, the accuracy with which he reads the play/movements of his teammates by moving in the right spaces is interesting.
Telles crossing ability is good, but too irregular. He attempts, often unsuccessful crosses very deep on the pitch. He is capable of sending very accurate crosses in dangerous areas when he is higher.
Telles is in charge of kicking corners and indirect free kicks in Porto.
He has delivered 4 assists from corner kicks this season.
Comparing Telles (in orange) to other wing-backs shows his offensive input in terms of crossing is average. Although, this needs to be tempered as Alex Telles tends to cross from very distant position. Telles shows some crossing skills when he is in a proper position.
The Brazilian is very good at supporting the team by his dead-ball/penalty kicking contribution or his passing ability. Besides, his proper striking technique offers solutions and Telles does not hesitate to shoot from long distance.
Alex Telles is very harsh on the ball carrier. This aggressiveness helps him compensate his poor duelling/positioning skills. Indeed, he tends to be too close from his opponent and he throws himself too quickly in the challenges.
Alex Telles is aware that he has very poor sliding tackles skills (25% of success). He prefers to defend standing up as he rarely attempts these tackles (0,3 per 90 min).
Despite this weakness, the Brazilian is a precious teammate when it comes to trigger a pressing.
Alex Telles' defensive positioning can sometimes be problematic. A failing ability to anticipate, a lack of concentration or bad positioning choices can sometimes put his team in very dangerous situations.
Alex Telles is a very offensive left-back. Extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, he has no problem launching his partners in behind, dribbling, kicking the set-pieces or getting out of his own half properly. His defensive qualities are however sometimes worrying.
