And the product was absolutely substandard for which many paid a premium. There was a joke about Premier Padmini cars "Everything makes noise except the horn"!!!

Undoubtedly, Bajaj family revelled in this licence permit raj. Selling sub standard scooters, hell Bajaj wont even install rear signal lights on their Auto Rickshaws till the Supreme Court forced them to.

Nehru as first PM of India was an unmitigated disaster.

Nehru killed our tradition of Small business in his obsession for big factories. Which would have happened with private capital any which ways. But Nehru invested our meagre resources into PSUs.

Neither did he have the common sense to trade our mineral deposits for technology.

But Nehru, brought in Licence Permit Raj thereby severely restricting Private Industry.

I will cite one example. Steam Locomotives. What was the need for Govt of India to invest in factories making Locos? When Tata's were capable of doing the same job?

Senseless investment of our meagre resources into PSUs resulted in our backbone that is agriculture sufferiing immesely.

India went thru massive food shortage in the 50s and 60s. We went begging around the world of something as basic as wheat.

The Americans helped us then.

PM Lal Bahadur Shastri reportedly ordered full review of Nehruvian policies asking one simple question to Babus "Why is the Govt of India investing in factories?".
