Do's and Dont's for am MP: A Thread

Democracies are meant to be by the people, for the people and of the people. To ensure public participation in governance, democracies use Parliaments as a means to allow public representatives to be the voice of the people.
Members of Parliament are specifically tasked to be mouthpieces of the constituents and the larger public they represent. They are paid to do just that. But given many MPs in Maldives seem to have completely forgotten their role, it might be important to refresh their memories.
MP's are elected to:

- Draft and debate and pass legislations using wide public consultations from within their respective constituencies.
- Discuss, debate and resolve systemic issues within individual constituencies and the larger community.
- Hold the other two branches of the state accountable and create mechanisms through independent institutions to hold the state accountable.
- Listen to their respective constituents and highlight the specific issues as a means to address and resolve the larger systemic issues.
- Have regular public consultations to ensure that the voice of the public is being properly raised in the Parliament.
- Be receptive and proactive with constituents and the public at large to ensure effective communication.
- Discuss, debate and pass the national budget after ensuring a balance between the needs of their constituencies with the larger economic needs of the country.
- Work with absolute inclusivity, non discrimination, equality and humility.
- MP's should be available to interface with the public at all platforms.
- MP's should ensure they use technology to communicate with constituents in the most cost efficient manner as possible.
MPs are not elected to:

- MP's are not responsible for piecemeal solutions that only increase patronage and individual dependancy.
- MP's should not encourage and engage in clientelism which only facilitates corruption and bribery.
- MP's are not charities but rather a means to ensure people don't need charities.
- MP's should not always be reactive in approach.
- MP's should not create a culture of materialism that compels constituents to measure their work by what they give.
A Member of Parliament is an employee of the people and should always, especially during a pandemic or a crises, be mindful to be as available to address public concerns as possible. These concerns should be met with humility and receptiveness as opposed to adamance.
