1/11 Last week, I posted this...

If lots of people are pointing, discussing or writing about the stains, how come many of us label it as sport washing? Lazy labelling more informed debate is required.

Quick search of Google Scholar reveals zero(!!!) studies of sport washing.
3/11 "We find that existing definitions of greenwashing overemphasize strategic intention"

"Greenwashing is constituted in eye of the beholder"

"Greenwashing [is] co-creation of an external accusation toward an organization with regard to presenting a misleading green message"
4/11 Interesting use in the paper of the concept of legitimacy

Which led me here - Conceptions of legitimacy
https://pdfhive.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Encyclopaedia-of-Government-and-Politics-PDFhive.com_.pdf#page=147

Dictionary definitions of legitimacy emphasise actions that are acceptable, permissible, well founded, valid, sound, authorised, justifiable....
5/11 In acquiring overseas sports assets, such as a football club, are countries therefore seeking legitimacy rather sport washing?

And are notions of legitimacy co-created?

On this basis, are there countries / organisations / people among us who intentionally seek not to....
6/11 ....confer legitimacy by, for example referring to some investments in sport as 'sport washing'?

However, are there those among us who do legitimise? In my mind, there are four types:

Active legitimisers
Indifferent legitimsers
Resistant legitimisers
Ignorant legitimisers
7/11 Active legitimisers

For example, football fans who post on social media to say positive things about a new club owner in spite of controversies in which the new owner is embroiled
8/11 Indifferent legitimisers

For example, football fans who are aware of controversies in which a new club owner is embroiled, though thy don't see such issues are being relevant or important to them
9/11 Resistant legitimisers

For example, football fans who are aware of controversies in which a new club owner is embroiled, who may even protest outside a ground & express negative views on social media. But who nevertheless still attend matches & remain as fans
10/11 Ignorant legitimisers

For example, football fans who are completely unaware of or oblivious to the controversies in which a new club owner is embroiled
11/11 Just some initial thoughts, I'm going to think about it some more....
