What is a psychological disorder?
- it is a psychological dysfunctional within an individual associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected. (p. 3, Abnormal Psychology. 8 ed; D.H Barlow, V.M Durand,S.G Hofman)
Take note that a "psychological disorder" is composed of 3 factors: (a) psychological dysfunctional
(b) distress or impairment
(c) atypical response
What is psychological dysfunction?
- refers to the breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning.
Why distress or impairment?
- the behavior must be associated with distress to be classified as a disorder adds an important component and seems clear; meaning there is should be distress or impairment with the said behavior for the criterion to be satisfied.
What an atypical response?
- sometimes, something is considered abnormal because it occurs infrequently; it deviates from the average. The greater the deviation the more abnormal it is.
Using this integrative approach we are now able to define with is a psychological disorder. In other words, all three must be present (or persistent in the individual) in the behavior for it to be considered a disorder.
What is a psychological disorder as defined by the Diagnostic & Statical Manual of Mental Disorders?
- its a behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with present distress and impairment in functioning.
Psychological Disorder is a term interchangable with mental disorder, or mental health disorder.
Now, what is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD?
- is an enduring, distressing emotional disorder that follows exposure to severe helplessness or a fear inducing threat. The victim reexperiences the trauma, avoids stimuli associated with it, & develops a numbing of —
— responsiveness and an increased vigilance & arousal.
There are 8 diagnostic criteria for PTSD and listing it will take time (also, I don't want people to self diagnosed themselves as PTSD px)
