I'm awake and I'm thinking about the young artist who rang me two days ago to ask me what I honestly thought their chances we're on drama school next year because they're a person of colour. They'd been looking at headshots of MT alumni and feeling discouraged. (1/5)
I didn't go to drama school. And I don't think I ever will. But I tried to be as helpful as possible with what knowledge I had despite that. But it's so hard trying to answer a question like that with care and realism sometimes as there can be so many ways to look at it. (2/5)
That phone call maybe the first of many for the years to come. But it shouldn't be. New students and artists shouldn't have to come up through a world where these questions are still among the first to come to mind. (3/5)
They shouldn't feel for a single moment that their world to play in is limited to The Colour Purple and Aladdin. And their peers should not be telling them that either- no matter how helpful they think they are being. (4/5)
There are an infinite amount of untold stories out there, even more to come.Old classics can be and will be reimagined. So much potential and possibility for us all. We just have to make sure we don't find ourselves settling for a preconceived default option every chance we get.
