Today is the 10th anniversary of Tron: Legacy. Time to watch it for the 140th time. Gunna break down why I love this movie so much.
The whole opening segment, from the title down to the establishing shot of this house, works in unison with the music. At times when I'm watching this movie, I feel like the soundtrack was built around the cinematography. This becomes a recurring thing in the film.
When this movie was getting promoted, there was a lot of hype around seeing this fully CGI Jeff Bridges. That slow circle reveal like this? Anticipation ramped up to the Nth degree.
I think it still holds up pretty well.
I just love how the TVs all light up to talk about Flynn disappearing. Emphasizes how big of a deal he was in the movie's universe. Again, the camera is slowly going in and the scene builds in unison with the music. Tron: Legacy is the most expensive music video ever.
"In there is our future...in there is our destiny."

REMEMBER THIS SCENE! WE'LL BE COMING BACK TO IT LATER!
The diegetic narration from the TVs earlier has seamlessly transitioned from being the main audio in the scene to being background noise coming from the TV in this scene. Great sound design and mixing.
Sam is on the bike. We hear his grandmother calling after him. Sharp transition to present day with Sam on his father's bike. We hear the grandmother in echo, almost like Sam's still running from that moment. Tells us EVERYTHING about this character's struggle in 10 seconds.
In this scene, the camera tilts in the opposite direction of the bike, giving the audience a greater sense of motion. Additionally, the bike sways IN RHYTHM with the fucking music! MISE-EN-SCENE AS FUCK!
I always get a laugh at how this security guard gets like 2 minutes of screen time and they still bother to give the guy proper foreshadowing.
Tron 1 reference. Same big ass door. Same line.

Like father, like son.
I think we can all agree....Fuck Dillinger Jr. Smug little shit.
Alan asks a good question, implying the company might be taking advantage of consumers. The extras are like "Oh, here we go". Smug boss gives smug answer. Alan corrects himself, pointing out how the company is removing Flynn's name from the product. Tells alot in a short scene.
The entire backstory, the changes to the world, the new positions that old characters find themselves in, new characters are established. We're all set and ready to go. And we're JUST at the 10 minute mark. Impressive.
This fucking aerial shot, combined with that Daft Punk track. Mmm. Fucking delicious.
Security guard: Didn't anyone tell you stealing is wrong?

Sam: Can't steal something that was designed to be free.

Sam has had very little screentime at this point and even fewer lines and he's more built up than most characters are at the END of a movie.
"Now do you know who the biggest shareholder is?"

"Some kid."

That smug grin always gets a laugh out of me.
The enthusiasm is infectious.
Every backdrop in this movie is stunning. The way the bridges are settled in the shot emphasizes the distance between Sam and the city. Perfect when you consider Sam is kind of a loner.
People give Hedlund a lot of shit as an actor, but I think he really nails his expressions. The dude tells more with a look than he does with dialogue.
The only time we hear a non-Daft Punk song is in the arcade here, and it's "Separate Ways (World's Apart)" by Journey. Which just sums up the plot perfectly.
Right as Sam is firing up the laser, "Sweet Dreams" by The Eurythmics starts to play as a bit of a warning.

This is why sound design and smart music choices work. You can't just cram in a bunch of pop songs like Birds of Prey did and expect it to work.
By the way...this effect wasn't filmed in 3D. Very little of this movie was shot using 3D cameras, it was just smart cinematography.
I'm literally pausing this fucking movie every 30 seconds to just admire the visuals.
Deresolution is a great way to brutally murder characters in your movie and stay PG-13!
Rinzler. Need I say more?
Mother fucking Rinzler.
