Tonight the coronavirus death toll will top 50,000 in the United States. I’ve spent some time examining @realDonaldTrump’s behavior on Twitter since the first confirmed death in the United States on February 29th. Here’s what I found:
Since February 29th, Donald Trump has tweeted or retweeted 1,596 times. That’s an average of 30 tweets per day. Let’s take a closer look.
In those 1,596 tweets, there were 55 mentions of fake news, 49 mentions of Joe Biden (and another 23 of “sleepy Joe”), 35 mentions of the border, 26 mentions of Nancy Pelosi, 20 mentions of ratings...
…15 mentions of CNN, 13 mentions of Barack Obama, 10 mentions of Elizabeth Warren, 8 mentions of impeachment (and another 6 of the “witch hunt”), 5 mentions of Hillary Clinton, and 3 mentions of Hunter Biden.
But none of that should come as a surprise. We know this is what Trump does and we have seen it for years now. However, there was one shocking thing about all of those tweets.
In those 1,596 tweets, there was not a single acknowledgement of any of the 50,000 Americans that have died from coronavirus over the past 54 days. No mentions of rest in peace, thoughts and prayers, condolences, grieving, or mourning. Nothing.
Take a step back and think about that. 50,000 Americans have unexpectedly died in a matter of weeks and the President of the United States hasn’t even acknowledged it. It’s chilling and it’s hard to comprehend, but the saddest part of it all is that it’s not surprising.
