If you're planning to share stories about the Saunders (Gunditjmara) family and their contributions this ANZAC day. Please tell the whole story. Share how Indigenous soldiers weren't given blocks of land like non-Indigenous soldiers when returning from war.
Talk about the racism they faced and the denial of services because they were black. Talk about the trauma of not finding work when returning from war, because white people didn't want to pay them for labour.
Don't just talk about their achievements like this country is united. Uncle Harry Saunders died fighting for a country that never acknowledged him as equal. Many men and women did, if they did survive they returned to a country that was living under a White Australia policy.
