heterophobia isnt real and yall need to do a history lesson: a thread (from a queer dude whos a little too obsessed with his communitys history)
!!cw for: homophobia mentions amd heavy topics!!
lets establish the difference between homophobia and "heterophobia". homophobia is a long-set narrative by our society that queer individuals are lesser in worth than others around us. this could be due to religious prejudice, or simple repulsion.
homophobia has been going on for centuries. however, it is not well documented until the 1950s-60s due to homophobia being accepted as a social norm, until the stonewall riots in 1969, kicking off the queer rights movement as we know it today.
the stonewall riots were heavily based off law enforcements prolonged abuse of queer individuals, mainly marked by the raiding and shutdowns of gay bars, specifically the stonewall inn.
police and bystanders would often say homophobic remarks to these individuals, sparking riots and often physical fights.

now that that is established, what is "heterophobia" at its core? first seen around the 1980s and 1990s, often times queer people at pride parades would
jokingly pull a "turntable remark" at homophobes, cheekily making remarks such as "heterosexuals are a known threat" and "remember: straight people cant help it!" in a way to shine light on the flat out silliness of these bigoted remarks.
nowadays, theyre still used this way! we make these jokes to backtalk our oppressors, and show that their arguments arent logical at all.
alright, thats all: be considerate and do your research before throw around false accusations! us making fun of our oppressors isnt the same as the oppression weve faced for years.
(circa 1989, and late 1990s)
