Postpartum depression (PPD) is a very real and often debilitating condition that can occur in women after childbirth. It is common for women to experience symptoms of postpartum depression, with 1 out of 9 women being estimated to experience PPD (Centers for Disease Control (1/7)
and Prevention [CDC], 2019). Depression and all subcategories of depression, including postpartum depression, is a taboo topic in which people do not like to talk about for whatever reason. For years, society has looked down on those who suffer from depression in any form, (2/7)
saying things like: “You are just sad, get over it!” or “You aren’t sad, you are just looking for attention.” Because of this negative stigma attached to experiencing depression/PPD, many women do not reach out when experiencing symptoms because 1) they are unaware that (3/7)
they may be experiencing symptoms of PPD, or 2) they do not want those around them to judge them for what they are going through. It is time to change this. If you are willing to work with me to fight against the negative stigma attached to postpartum depression, please (4/7)
join me in sharing this information. If you are willing to be a person that pregnant and postpartum women can talk to about symptoms they may be experiencing, please share this information. The physical and mental health of mother’s is imperative to their ability to care (5/7)
for themselves and for their children. We need to support them in whatever way we can, especially right now during this time of uncertainty. Please join me in my effort to spread awareness of postpartum depression by sharing this thread! For more information, here is (6/7)
