the most controversial album covers of all time | thread
the beatles - yesterday and today
this album featured a bizarre sleeve shot of the beatles clad in butcher’s coats, draped in slabs of meat and dismembered doll parts. intended as pop art satire, the artwork quickly became one of the world’s first controversial album covers.
david bowie - diamond dogs
the album featured a gatefold sleeve which, in full, literally depicted him with dog’s parts. the image was intended to represent bowie’s own influenced vision of a post-apocalyptic world, but the offending genitalia were subsequently airbrushed.
pusha t - daytona
a photo of whitney houston's bathroom was chosen to upset and provoke, and was condemned by houston's relatives. he himself denied the responsibility by saying that it was kanye west who chose it and changed the intended cover at the last minute.
john lennon & yoko - two virgins
it was shot using a time-delay camera allowing them to take nude photographs of themselves. predictably, the resulting atwork provoked outrage, prompting distributors to sell the album in a plain brown wrapper.
nirvana - nevermind
nirvana’s second album features four-month-old spencer elden swimming in a pool for babies. geffen were worried. they prepared an airbrushed alternative cover, but kurt cobain was adamant the original picture should remain.
kanye west - my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
kanye deliberately set out to create an artwork that would rank alongside the most controversial album covers, allegedly wanting his album to be housed in a sleeve that would be banned.
suede - suede
the band's 1993 debut album has a picture of two women kissing on the sleeve. the shot was taken by photographer tee corrine and was chosen by singer brett anderson because of its "ambiguity".
crystal castles - alice practice
the duo's debut had a drawing of madonna with a black eye. aside from accusations of misogyny, the artist took legal action when he claimed the band hadn't asked permission to use the work. they settled out of court.
