Been catching up on a lot of movies since this whole shelter thing started. Lots of essentials that I had been missing for far too long.
Started out with Blade Runner, both original and 2049. Both blew me away, the world they built with the original and the depiction of future Los Angeles was fantastic. My knee jerk reaction was liking 2049 more but as I’ve sat with it the original left a deeper impression on me
I’m really uneducated when it comes to Scorsese movies. Watched Taxi Driver earlier this year and was blown away by DeNiro and the cinematography. So I watched Goodfellas maybe with too high of expectations? It was certainly entertaining but by no means did it blow me away.
Watched the recent re-make of Suspiria and holy crap. The way everyone hyped Midsommar to me (which I didn’t think was good at all) as this crazy disturbing movie, well if that’s what you’re looking for watch Suspiria and hang in there til the end.
Finally watched the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and really enjoyed it. Thought a lot of the sfx held up well and had an outstanding performance by James Mason. Led me to then watch him in Journey to the Center of the Earth. Also great but sfx didn’t hold up as well here
Was very excited for Baby Driver. After watching, it had an unfortunate amount of Kevin Spacey and was far more style than substance. Would probably recommend skipping.
Frozen II felt 100% like it was written for the stage as supposed to the screen which is fine I guess? Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. However Into the Unknown is definitely still stuck in my head
PT Anderson being another director I’m uneducated in I decided to watch Hard Eight. Loved the opening of the film (who doesn’t love casino movies?) but it gets weak in the middle IMO. Good ending though. Regardless the whole film is worth it just for the matches in pocket scene
Finally got around to El Camino. It wasn’t perfect but I’m such a huge fan of that whole world that Vince Gilligan created. So fun to revisit the character in this. If you’re a fan of Breaking Bad at all the film is a must watch (you should also be watching Better Call Saul)
And finally I watched Parasite. It was really interesting to see a film that blended genres so well. I don’t really know what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t what I had in mind. Stunning imagery though. I’ll continue to update this thread as the shelter movies continue!
