due to what happened yesterday, i realized many canadian armys r not properly educated on the current events n history of indigenous canadians, so here is a thread to start w/

tw/ sources deal w abuse, suicide, rape etc

itll cover politics, art, residential schools, n poverty
before i begin, i am not indigenous myself, i come from an immigrant family, but i feel very deeply about the indigenous struggle in canada.

if u have anything u would like to add to this thread, let me know, i too am open to learning more
for current events, i thought an outsider pov might help. this is hasan minhaj’s ep on canada, w/ an exclusive interview w/ trudeau that shows his stance. minhaj joins comedic relief with accurate research for this special
this article highlights just a couple of experiences in residential schools, big tw for rape and abuse in this one
https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/06/canada-dark-of-history-residential-schools
another article on residential schools, if you would like u can look up videos on the issue on yt if u r not a reader, but those can become hard to hear

the last residential school was shut down in 1996, 24 years ago
https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/residential-schools
to go deeper into how long this has been going on, this article briefly overviews the history, but it can only highlight so much. it is a good start http://affinitymagazine.us/2017/02/18/canadas-history-of-mistreating-aboriginal-people/
mistreatment of indigenous peoples have stemmed throughout generations and is very present in the current day. this article deals w/ the mental health issues that indigenous ppl deal w/
https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/health/suicide-among-canada-s-first-nations-key-numbers-1.2854899
not only has suicide rates increased, but so have homicide cases, as indigenous women continue to go missing
https://www.amnesty.ca/blog/missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-and-girls-understanding-the-numbers
it doesnt stop there, many of these issues stem from poverty in indigenous communities, n according to poverty canada, indigenous people experience the highest level of poverty in canada https://www.povertyinstitute.ca/poverty-canada
in addition to that, increased police bias has caused higher rates of indigenous people in Canada’s prisons
https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/jan/22/one-third-canada-prisoners-indigenous-report
another reference for beautiful and powerful art, its one of the ways i could resonate w/ their experiences. after the pandemic try visiting the AGO or museums in ur area for indigenous art https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/amp/entry/aboriginal-art-canada_n_7539490/
on to current news, the wet’suwet’en protests tht have been on since the beginning of the winter against pipelines that the govt is building into indigenous homes https://amp.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2018/jun/19/salish-sea-pipeline-indigenous-salish-sea-canada-trans-mountain
currently the protests have had to stop, but these pipeline are being built WITHOUT consent, going against the indigenous voice and destroying their homes once again https://globalnews.ca/news/6634179/indigenous-consent-pipeline-protests/amp/
even though the protests have stopped for safety measures, the police r not stopping their presence in indigenous communities, n the pipeline is STILL being built. https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/20/gas-pipeline-wetsuweten-coronavirus-pandemic-indigenous-sovereignty-canada-oil/
as of rn, only $15M dollars out of a $350M dollar budget has been allocated for indigenous businesses, and it is not nearly enough as communities live in isolated n colder areas https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5539883
i hope everyone can see now why yesterday was such a problem. the PM has given you YOUR rights and money for you AS HE SHOULD as the face of govt, but the biggest minority group in Canada still has nothing

many did not know current events w/indigenous communities +
+ and thus i thought this thread was necessary. share it to whoever u think may benefit from it, drop anything in the comments that u would like to add and pls do express ur opinion.

the only way for us to do better is to become the generation that listens and learns.
currently the govt of Canada has tried to put in motion the Reconciliation between Canadian govt and indigenous communties, but so far nothing has been forth that is ACTUALLY substantial. indigenous people deserve justice and a proper voice after decades of oppression.
if anyone knows of any organizations currently helping indigenous communities struggling with the pandemic, or with any of the other problems listed above, feel free to drop a link.

thank you for reading ☺️
i think tjis is also a very important read that shows the affects of generational oppression and how it is still very much a modern problem https://twitter.com/slutdropforjin/status/1237543211372965889?s=21 https://twitter.com/slutdropforjin/status/1237543211372965889
