Amidst this stressful time of COVID19, we understand that customers are especially concerned about their bills. In light of this we wish to clarify some of the factors and extent to which they affect your bill.
As a utility regulated by @TheOURja billing rates are set and are not manipulated. JPS is required to bill customers accurately at their respective rates.
JPS has seen increased electricity consumption by residential customers since the start of the COVID19 outbreak. We do encourage you to monitor your own consumption trends with chart on your bill.
Alongside consumption, we encourage that you take note of the number of days you are billed for as it may be anywhere between 28 and 35 days.
With consistent usage (measured in kWh), bills should remain within the same range given stability of other factors: (F/E rates and fuel prices)
During this COVID19 crisis, some of our routines have likely changed. We’re at home more, electronic devices are on more, we’re cooking more, opening the fridge more, just using more.
If you do notice a spike in usage that doesn't fit with your actions recently, then we do encourage you to contact us to investigate.
Let’s talk oil. Recently oil prices have seen historic drops. Customers knowing this were looking for drops in their fuel charges too.
JPS and the GOJ have shifted from the era of being 90% dependent on oil, to having LNG being approximately ⅔ of our fuel mix. So with Oil being approximately ⅓ of the mix, huge changes in the price of oil either direction have less impact on your bill.
Unfortunately JPS does not buy oil on the world market. So the oil that JPS purchases from Petrojam to generate electricity does not reflect the level of reductions being reported on the world oil markets.
The stability of LNG acts as a cushion for customers when oil prices get high, at the same time we do not benefit as much in these unpredictable times as the price for natural gas has remained stable.
We do understand the concerns at this time. We remain committed to serving the public and we are available to address specific concerns through our various channels(FB/Twitter @myjpsonline, Webchat http://www.jpsco.com  & by phone 888-225-5577). Remember, we’re in this together
