I just saw a post on Facebook extolling the virtues of homeschooling while denigrating public schools. 1/13 #Adventist #homeschool #homeschooling
Since I participate in both, I'll address this here, since I couldn't there (it was a public post, but not open to comments). 2/13
Basically the poster was bragging how their children were handling the pandemic so much better than public school students. 3/13
The poster claimed that most public school students were "doing nothing" academic and just playing video games. 4/13
This is a poor straw man argument. Worse still, it pits parents against each other. 5/13
I homeschool my older children. My younger child, due to autism, has homeschooled, but does much better in a structured school environment for many reasons. 6/13
Church/private school did not meet her needs. This is a complicated issue, and cannot be addressed in this thread due to length. 7/13
She has been actively participating in daily assignments, online speech and occupational therapy classes, and having zoom meetings with teachers, coaches and even the principal! 8/13
She actively participates and loves the interaction. She desperately misses her friends and teachers though. She needs her real life socializing eventually! 9/13
My homeschoolers are doing excellently as well. They are self-motivated and participating socially as well, completing assignments and group participation online. 10/13
Both the public school and the homeschool can survive and even thrive in this pandemic. It's not either/or. Ever. I can meet each of my children's needs in different ways. 11/13
Public school can be wonderful. Or it can be botched. Private school has the same potential. Homeschools can be rich learning environments or they can be botched too. 12/13
Homeschoolers: stop denigrating brick and mortar schools, especially public ones. It's arrogant and ignorant. 13/13
