Sarah Iannarone Campaign Statement on Supreme Court Decision: THREAD ⤵️ https://twitter.com/robwdavis/status/1253409907363024898
Today we learned that in a historic decision, the Oregon Supreme Court has upheld reasonable campaign contributions as constitutional.
To be clear, it has always been our campaign’s position that such limitations were not only constitutional but essential to the health of our democracy. Further, such reasonable limits are clearly the will of voters as they were passed with over 87% of the vote.
Despite this clear mandate, our opponent Mayor Wheeler has ignored these voter-approved limits (and arguments made by City attorneys), gambling that they would be found unconstitutional. He has been rooting against the will of his own constituents for the benefit of his campaign.
While Ted Wheeler’s own donors and endorsers were suing our city attorney to allow for their massive contributions, our campaign was building a small donor, grassroots powerhouse.
In stark contrast, Mayor Wheeler chose to fund his campaign with contributions almost exclusively over the voter-approved limits. Since the voter supported limits went into effect, more than 87% of the Wheeler’s fundraising has been from donations above the limit.
While we believe his campaign should return these illegal contributions, we hold no hope that he will do the right thing. Ignoring the will of his constituents and the law is what we have come to expect.
Instead of holding out hope for a moral awakening, we ask that the voters of Portland reject the entitlement, lawlessness, and lack of accountability that Wheeler’s choices highlight.
Our campaign has received the most donations of any race for City government in this cycle and benefits from the support of thousands of Portlanders interested in furthering a progressive agenda for our city.
Sarah’s administration will enforce contribution limits and advance democratic best practices from around the world to ensure that all Portlanders, not just the wealthy and special interests, know they have a voice.
