After today’s Board of Elections meeting, I wanted to provide you all with some answers to the questions you have presented to me regarding the mail-in voting process and Election Day in general... [THREAD]
1Q- What should college students do who requested an absentee ballot be sent to their school address now that they are no longer on campus?
1A- Anyone who needs to request a mail-in ballot to a new address can contact the Allegheny County Elections division at 412-350-4500 to request their original application be voided and a new application be sent to their current address.
2Q- How many mail-in applications have been received, how many have been processed, and how many ballots have been mailed out?
2A- 90,000 applications received, 35,000 processed, 20,000 ballots mailed out, 56,000 applications are still in queue, with 5,000 applications processed each day. ALL MAIL-IN APPLICATIONS WILL BE SENT OUT BY MAY 7TH, with ballots sent out in the order applications were received.
3Q- What does staffing look like at the Elections Division right now?
3A- The Elections Division is working very hard to get all of the mail-in applications processed as quickly and efficiently as possible. An additional 40 staff members from the Department of Court Records are being sent to help in the Elections Division starting Monday.
3A CONTINUED- They are working 7a-3p and 3p-11p shifts. The Department of State is sending 25 additional work stations necessary for processing applications to the County within the next week to assist in the effort.
4Q- When will we know the final status of polling location consolidation and how will voters be informed of the changes?
4A- The county has a call with the state tomorrow morning where they plan to get permission to implement the below resolution. As soon as it is approved, Elections Division will begin calling municipal buildings to coordinate their use for polling locations.
4A CONTINUED- After all plans are final, every registered voter in the county will receive a letter notifying them of their polling location change. Signage will also be posted on the door of every original polling location on Election Day letting voters know of location change.
5Q- How many poll workers are required for each polling location?
5A- The county would like to see 5 workers at each location, but could manage 3-4 workers at each. There are ~750 elected poll workers in the county who will be split up around the county to where needed, and will not necessarily be assigned to the precinct they are elected to.
6Q- How many poll workers have committed to and been trained for the June 2nd election?
6A- Prior to the quarantine, Allegheny County had 1600 poll workers signed up and trained to work the polls on Election Day. There is not a current number available, but the county plans to reach out to each of these workers after Governor Wolf lifts the Stay-At-Home order,
6A CONTINUED- which they presume will happen by May 10th. Training will then resume for additional poll workers who have not yet received training on our new machines. If the order is not lifted by then, the county will explore options for online/video trainings for poll workers.
7Q- Will PPE and other precautions be taken to protect our poll workers and warehouse workers?
7A- 600 PPE Precinct Kits being provided by the state + the county has 6,700 sets of gloves/masks to be provided for every poll worker and warehouse worker. Hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes, & disposable pens for every location, & styluses for every ADA accessible machine.
8Q- What are we doing to ensure incarcerated voters receive a mail-in ballot application that is being sent to every registered voter in the county, even though they are registered at their home address?
8A- A list of incarcerated individuals will be cross-referenced with a list of registered voters to ensure everyone in the jail who is able to vote in this election receives an application for a mail-in ballot.
Oh I forgot one! I also asked about any provisions that could be made for 3rd party candidates who are losing valuable months of their petition season - answer is that any directive to change requirements would have to come from the state
