For years, Cowlitz Co youth jail has been jailing migrant kids for ICE. Separated from their families, sent cross-country, an unknown number have been held w/o benefits of due process — for which Cowlitz nets a tidy $170/kid/day. But we recently learned...
...that due to COVID-19, Cowlitz Co released US citizen kids in March, leaving only the migrant kids incarcerated + exposed. Kids currently imprisoned include a girl who came to the US from Mexico at the age of 11 months; a boy from Honduras who says he’s "afraid all the time"...
due to the pandemic; and a 17 y.o. boy born in Guatemala who’s been in ICE custody since 2018. ICE says they are threats to public safety, but refuses to show evidence for such claims. If Cowlitz’s youth jail isn't safe enough for US kids, it isn't safe for these kids either.
